US space agency NASA publishes satellite images showing the smog that enveloped the island of Sumatra, Borneo, as well as parts of Singapore and Malaysia.
Photos published via Twitter account of NASA Earth (NASA_EO) on October 1, 2015 and referred to NASA as smog smothering.
Photos taken with imaging technology Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) owned by NASA's Terra satellite revealed haze coming from forest fires on the island Sumatrea and Borneo.
Haze visible in the wind to the north, so that helped blanketed the area of Singapore and Malaysia. The points of fire was also marked by the red circle in the image.
According to scientists at the NASA Earth Observatory website, the haze condition and forest fires in Indonesia this year to be very bad because it is affected by the heat wave that extends the El Nino drought, and reducing rainfall, the same as in 1997.
According to NASA, the conditions in Sumatra and the southern region of Singapore together with El Nino conditions in 1997, where some areas only have a visibility of less than 1 kilometer in one week.
In Kalimantan, even worse, visibility in some areas are reported only 50 meters away.
Data collected by MODIS also calculate aerosol particles contained in the air in the region. According to NASA this year the amount of smoke particles equal the 2006 smog that is equally severe condition.
The difference is, the highest level of smoke particle content of this year occurred a few weeks earlier than in 2006.
If the prolonged dry season continues this year, then in 2015 became one of the worst year of smog that occur in Indonesia.
