Formerly this zoo in the call with En Planten Dierentuin which means "plants and gardens Animals" This is a gift Raden saleh located in Cikini, Menteng, Central Jakarta, with a land area of 10 hectares once, which is managed by a set of flora and fauna lover Batavia and Planten Vereniging joined with Culturule en Dierentuin at Batavia.

In 1949 the name changed Planten En Dierentuin Cikini Zoo and in 1969 moved to the area ragunan, Sunday Market, South Jakarta. And in 1964 the government of DKI Jakarta donated 30 hectares of land that will become a zoo. On 22 June 1966 Jakarta Governor Ali Sadikin Launches Ragunan Zoo.

This zoo is the first zoo in Indonesia, which was established in 1864 under the name En Planten Dierentuin, which means "Plants and zoo". Ragunan Zoo is now housed at Ragunan district, Pasar Minggu in South Jakarta, Indonesia. The zoo is located with an area of 140 hectares and was established in 1864 at the zoo, there are 295 species and 4040 specimens.

Formerly this zoo was closed because of the animals in this zoo infected with bird flu, closed about three weeks which began on 19 September 2005 and then in the open again on 11 October 2005.
